Strengths
- Google Docs are online making it more accessible outside the realm of the classroom
- Utilises various formats to suit its purpose
- Allows for collaboration and co-editing of documents for various tasks
- You can upload documents, videos and images from a desktop
- Provides the option to insert information into graphs and charts which supports thinking strategies through the organisation of ideas
- Supportive of visual learners
- It can be used as a form of communication
- Greater accessibility to share work with a wider audience through embedding it into external sites
- No need to use email
- It is free to use
Weaknesses
- It requires scaffolding in order to use it meaningfully and to maximise learning potential
- Some of the functions are complex and therefore some may not be suitable for all learners
- It requires rules and regulations in order to utilise it appropriately and cooperatively
- Contributions would need to monitored to ensure that everyone is contributing.
Opportunities
- Students can edit work at home as part of homework
- It provides flexibility to the learning environment
- Students can do assignments while the teacher can monitor student progress and provide feedback where necessary to support learning
Threats
- Safety and privacy concerns particularly if important documents are being stored online
- Students may feel that their unique contributions are under constant scrutiny
- Students may edit others contributions when they have spent considerable time compiling information
